PopUP Magazine
PopUP Magazine started out originally as a project for my Typography 417 class at NC State. We were tasked with creating a magazine that would stand out on stands, and cover topics that hopefully aren’t already covered.
I really love music, and had recently become obsessed with watching and reading interviews of my favorite artists, especially about their creative process, whether it be elaborately planned or spontaneously acted upon. I rounded this out into a magazine that would cover exclusively artists who did not start with label backing, and essentially started out of their bedrooms. It would put heavy emphasis on the homegrown aspect of it, asking about what they did to substitute for expensive musical instruments and recording devices.
To the left are process photos for the original designs and flat-plans. Of course, they are a bit messy, but I’m so glad I kept those around to reflect on my process. There are grids, text and paragraph styles, and logo iterations including critique notes.
Since then, this has been a project that I’m very attached to and proud of. It feels like an identity project, and it makes me happy to go back and refresh it whenever I feel like I as a person and designer have changed. Below are the two versions, one from class and one from a recent overhaul done in 2021-2022. Although not entirely finished, what is shown so far is consistent of how I’d want to see this magazine if it was sold in stores today.Design Category
